After a series of successful raids through the Caribbean, Captain Pedro of Arragon and his crew return to the island of Tortuga; a haven-port for the buccaneers of the late seventeenth century. There the crew is greeted by the party of Leonato and his brother Antonio; two wealthy inn keepers who are anxious to welcome their pirate friends back to port.
Aboard Captain Pedro’s returning ship are two young comrades; a Florentine pirate named Claudio and his mate Benedick of Padua. Also aboard is John, the bastard brother of the Captain, and two swashbucklers Borachio and Conrade.
When both parties reunite, there is made clear a battle of sorts between the niece of Leonato, Beatrice, and the returned Benedick. They exchange humorous remarks and profess to their friends that love is something that they vow to never take part in – Beatrice renounces the idea of marriage, and Benedick wants to be forever a bachelor. Yet, their friends feel differently about the idea of love; for Claudio falls for Leonato’s daughter, the young and mild Hero. Captain Pedro sets about to help Claudio win Hero’s hand, but problems arise when his ill-tempered brother John conspires with Borachio and Conrade to destroy any chance of happiness within the two parties. Even so, optimism within the companies overrules, and the pirates and their friends create a devious plot of their own; to unite Benedick and Beatrice.
Within a muddle of mistaken identity, trickery, and scallywags, the troupe is able regain their merriness through the influences of love and good old slapstick pirate comedy.
